This report summarizes presentations and discussions at the Workshop on the211u001eSocial Processes Underlying Fertility Change in Developing Countries, organized 211u001eby the Committee on Population of the National Research Council (NRC) in 211u001eWashington, D.C., January 29-30, 1998. Fourteen paper were presented at the 211u001eworkshop; they represented both theoretical and empirical perspectives and shed 211u001enew light on the role that diffusion processes may play in fertility transition. 211u001eThese papers served as the basis for the discussion that is summarized in this 211u001ereport. In addition to this summary, the papers themselves were bound in draft 211u001eform and distributed to a limited audience in 1998. A selection of the paper will 211u001ebe edited and published as a separate volume.
