This paper describes the design of NIP, a runtime system for supporting implicit211u001eparallelism in languages which combine both functional and object-oriented 211u001eprogramming, NIP is designed for sealable distributed memory systems including 211u001enetworks of workstations and custom parallel machines. The key components of NIP 211u001eare: a parallel task execution unit which includes a novel and efficient method 211u001efor lazily creating parallel tasks from loop iterations; a novel distributed 211u001eshared memory system optimized for parallel object-oriented programs; and a load 211u001ebalancing system for distributing work over the modes of the parallel system. The 211u001epaper describes the requirements placed on the runtime system by an implicitly 211u001eparallel language and then details the design of the components that comprise 211u001eNIP, showing how the components meet these requirements. Performance results for 211u001eNIP running programs on a network of workstations are presented and analyzed.
