Health improvement is what public health professionals strive to achieve. To211u001ereach this goal, we must devote our skill and our will to evaluating the effects 211u001eof public health actions. As the targets of public health actions have expanded 211u001ebeyond infectious diseases to include chronic diseases, violence, emerging 211u001epathogens, threats of bioterrorism, and the social contexts that influence health 211u001edisparities, the task of evaluation has become more complex. CDC developed the 211u001eframework for program evaluation to ensure that amidst the complex transition in 211u001epublic health, we will remain accountable and committed to achieving measurable 211u001ehealth outcomes. By integrating the principles of this framework into all CDC 211u001eprogram operations, we will stimulate innovation toward outcome improvement and 211u001ebe better positioned to detect program effects. More efficient and timely 211u001edetection of these effects will enhance our ability to translate findings into 211u001epractice. Guided by the steps and standards in the framework, our basic approach 211u001eto program planning will also evolve.
