This synthesis report will be of interest to pavement and geotechnical design and211u001eresearch engineers, geologists and engineering geologists, and similar laboratory 211u001epersonnel. It describes the current practice for measuring the in situ mechanical 211u001eproperties of pavement subgrade soils. The tests conducted to estimate the 211u001emechanical properties of soil strength and stiffness are the primary topics, and 211u001ethese are discussed in the context of design procedure, factors affecting 211u001emechanical properties and the variability of measurements. Information for the 211u001esynthesis was collected by surveying U.S., Canadian, and selected European 211u001etransportation agencies and by conducting a literature search. This 211u001eTransportation Research Board report provides information on existing and 211u001eemerging technologies for static and dynamic, and destructive and nondestructive 211u001etesting for measuring in situ properties of pavement subgrade soils. Correlation 211u001ebetween in situ and laboratory tests are presented.
