Removal rates of hydrocarbons and methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) from the non-211u001eaqueous phase liquid (NAPL) residual source floating over the water table were 211u001eestimated with site characterization data at the petroleum contamination site in 211u001ethe US Coast Guard (USCG) air-base. Site characterization activities included 211u001esoil and groundwater sampling, total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) and components 211u001eanalysis in soil samples, analysis of hydrocarbons and electron acceptors in 211u001egroundwater, and hydraulic conductivity. Total quantities of hydrocarbons and 211u001eMTBE in subsurface were estimated from soil sampling data. Dissolution rates or 211u001ehydrocarbon components from the residual NAPL source into groundwater were 211u001eestimated with a vertical diffusion model. Estimation of hydrocarbon and MTBE 211u001eremoval from the residual source in soil matrices was verified with mass balance 211u001echeck. Mass balance check allowed the quantitative evaluation of the fate and 211u001etransport of contaminants from the sources to the sensitive receptors. The 211u001econceptual model and quantification of removal rates provided an estimation of 211u001eapplication period of natural attenuation at the site as the plume management 211u001estrategy.
