Characterizing Bus Transit Passenger Wait Times

Mathematical models are developed to predict bus passenger waiting time211u001ecomponents. A statistically significant quantity of waiting time data, including 211u001erelated passenger attributes, transits system characteristics and bus frequency, 211u001ewere collected by direct observation and video taping. The experimental data were 211u001ecollected in a six-month period at several bus transfer centers and bus stations 211u001ein the city of Austin, Texas. Measured wait time was decomposed into two 211u001ecomponents: 'wait time before scheduled departure time' and 'wait time after 211u001escheduled departure time.' The effects of bus frequeny and reliability, as well 211u001eas other potential predictors on wait time components, were examined by 211u001eperforming Analysis of Variance and Regression. Traditional and conceptual 211u001ewaiting time models were evaluated using this data set and compared to the new 211u001edeveloped models.
