This construction report summarizes the placement of two thin lift polymer bridge211u001edeck overlays on adjacent structures carrying Interstate 57 near Clifton, 211u001eIllinois. Funding for the contract was provided by the Intermodal Surface 211u001eTransportation Efficiency Act of 1991 (ISTEA), Section 6005(e)7. Just before full-211u001escale overlay placement, a test area was constructed using the proposed surface 211u001epreparation and overlay placement methods. Pull-off tests (ACI 503R-80) indicated 211u001ethat the methods were sound, so construction proceeded. The overlay was placed 211u001eduring four days in September of 1995 using a broom-and-seed application method. 211u001eA durable rhyolitic stone aggregate (trap rock) was used on both lifts. Skid 211u001etesting was performed four weeks, 10 months, and 20 months after construction. 211u001eSkid numbers were well above typical friction numbers for new bituminous and 211u001eportland cement concrete pavements at four weeks, and were still comparable to 211u001enew PCC pavement after 20 months.
