This report presents the proceedings of a technical conference on ocular measures211u001eof driver alertness, sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) 211u001eOffice of Motor Carrier and Highway Safety and the National Highway Traffic 211u001eSafety Administration (NHTSA) Office of Motor Carrier and Highway Safety and the 211u001eNational Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Office of Vehicle Safety 211u001eResearch. The purpose of this conference was to (1) share recent FHWA/NHTSA 211u001efindings regarding the validity of eye-based measures of driver alertness, (2) 211u001eshare recent FHWA and NHTSA technology developments in this area, (3) identify 211u001eand provide information about other Research and Technology studies relevant to 211u001ein-vehicle alertness monitoring, (4) review the overall state-of-the-art of in-211u001evehicle altertness monitoring, (5) review concepts for feedback of alertness 211u001einformation to drivers and other proposed features of driver-vehicle interface, 211u001eand (6) review concepts for the successful and user-acceptable introduction of in-211u001evehicle alertness monitoring systems to commerical motor carrier fleets.
