The effectiveness of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technologies in211u001eenhancing the quality of life in congested urban and suburban areas critically 211u001edepends on drivers' response to these systems and to the information capabilities 211u001ethat they offer. In particular, Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) aim 211u001eto improve network flow conditions through the provision of real-time information 211u001eto drivers, at the tip origin as well as en route. As decisions about the 211u001econfiguration and deployment of such potentially expensive technologies come 211u001eunder consideration, it is essential to develop the body of fundamental knowledge 211u001eon driver decision-making processes under real-time information supply 211u001estrategies. This report is structured as a behavioral research effort to examine 211u001ethe processes underlying commuter decisions on en-route diversions and day-to-day 211u001edeparture time and route choices as influenced by the provision of real-time 211u001etraffic information. This report presents a series of large-scale laboratory-like 211u001eexperiments in which real commuters interact with and among multiple participants 211u001ein a traffic network in real-time under various information strategies through a 211u001edynamic travel simulator. This simulator considers both the supply side system 211u001eperformance as influenced by driver response to real-time traffic information as 211u001ewell as the demand-side driver behavior as influenced by real-time traffic 211u001einformation based on system performance.
