The Web frequently suffers from failures which can affect both the performance211u001eand consistency of applications running over it. For resources such as documents, 211u001efailures may simply be annoying to users; for commercial services, they can 211u001eresult in loss of revenue and credibility. Atomic transactions are a well-known 211u001etechnique for guaranteeing application consistency in the presence of failures. 211u001eHowever, their use within Web applications is currently limited to Web servers: 211u001eBrowsers are not included, despite their role becoming more significant in 211u001eelectronic commerce applications. With the advent of Java it is possible to 211u001eempower browsers so that they can fully participate within transactional 211u001eapplications.
