摘要

Because of congressional interest in enhancing parental responsibility and self-211u001esufficiency among families receiving public assistance and concern about the need 211u001efor improved management of the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program, we 211u001eexplored opportunities for increasing the number of SSI single-parent families 211u001ereceiving child support and for improving the reporting of such support to Social 211u001eSecurity Administration (SSA). More specifically, we identified the potential for 211u001ereducing SSI Payments by increasing the extent to which (1) SSI children in 211u001esingle-parent families are served by the CSE program and have support collected 211u001efor them and (2) support collected by the CSE is reported by custodial parents to 211u001eSSA. We focused our work on the CSE program in Florida, New York, and Texas, 211u001ethree of four states with the largest numbers of children receiving SSI. We did 211u001eour work between May 1997 and December 1998 in accordance with generally accepted 211u001egovernment auditing standard.
