There has been a recent growth of interest in object-oriented parallel systems.211u001eThis paper describes an investigation into the design of a specialist software 211u001eDistributed Shared Memory (DSM) to support such systems. The vehicle for this 211u001einvestigation was the NIP parallel run-time system. NIP was designed to support 211u001eimplicitly parallel languages combining the object-oriented and functional 211u001eapproaches to programming. The NIPDSM is the object-based software DSM component 211u001eof NIP. The paper shows that it is possible to design a set of optimizations to 211u001eexploit the characteristics of object-oriented systems in order to deliver higher 211u001eperformance than could be achieved by a conventional DSM design which took no 211u001eaccount of the object-oriented natural of the system. In the paper, the design 211u001eand implementation of the NIPDSM are described, and performance results are 211u001epresented.
