Challenge of Housing Security: Report to Congress on the Housing Conditions and211 Needs of Older Americans

In its report on fiscal year 1999 funding for the U.S. Department of Housing and211u001eUrban Development (HUD), the Senate Committee on Appropriations directed the 211u001edepartment to report on the unmet need for elderly housing in this country, and 211u001ethe physical condition of existing elderly housing. HUD responded and found that 211u001eoverall, older Americans are among the best housed citizens of a well-housed 211u001eNation. However, HUD also found that millions of elderly households continue to 211u001elive in housing that costs too much, is in substandard condition, or fails to 211u001eaccomoodate their physical capabilities or assistance needs. This report 211u001eidentifies challenges to each of the three key dimensions of elderly housing 211u001econditions: adequacy, affordability, and accessibility.
