Food insecurity in may low-income, developing counties is projected to intensify211u001eunless steps are taken to reverse the performance trend of key contributing 211u001efactors: agricultural productivity, foreign exchange earnings, and population 211u001egrowth. For the poorest countries, an increase in agricultural productivity is 211u001ethe key to improving food security. In these countries, imports play a small role 211u001ein the domestic food supply because of limited foreign exchange availability. 211u001eThis study evaluates availability and distribution of food and analyzes their 211u001etrends through 2008 by projecting food gaps to maintain per capita consumption, 211u001emeet nutritional needs, and fulfill requirements stemming from unequal food 211u001edistribution.
