摘要

The University of Washington (UW) and Battelle Marine Sciences Laboratory (MSL)211u001eare jointly conducting a multiyear, three-phased research program to determine 211u001ewhether ferry terminals affect migrating juvenile salmon, and if so, how future 211u001edesign of ferry terminals and modifications to both terminals and operations can 211u001emitigate those impacts. Phase I resulted in a report synthesizing the technical 211u001eknowledge regarding the potential effects of shoreline structures on migrating 211u001ejuvenile salmon. This report summarizes the authors' results from Phase II pilot 211u001efield studies at the Port Townsend ferry terminal in spring 1999 and provides 211u001erecommendations for proposed on-site tests of the effects of a range of different 211u001eWSDOT ferry terminals and vessel activity patterns in Phase III (spring-winter 211u001e2000). The overall goal of Phase II was to perform pilot field terminals and 211u001evessel activity patterns in Phase III (spring-winter 2000) The overall goal of 211u001ePhase II was to perform pilot field experiments with releases of hatchery chum 211u001eand chinook fry to test whether the Port Townsend terminal stops or delays the 211u001enatural migration of juvenile salmon. Monitoring methods included diving surveys, 211u001ebeach seining surveys, single-beam and split-beam hydroacoustics, remote 211u001eunderwater video, and in situ light sensors.
