This fifth edition is an update and expansion of the 1989 fourth edition. The211u001eOffice of Pesticide Programs of the United States Environmental Protection Agency 211u001ehas sponsored the series since 1973. The purpose of the manual is to provide 211u001ehealth professionals with recently available information on the health hazards of 211u001epesticides currently in use, and current consensus recommendations for management 211u001eof poisonings and injuries caused by them. Pesticide poisoning is a commonly 211u001eunder-diagnosed illness in Ameria today. Despite recommendations by the Institute 211u001eof Medicine and others urging the integration of environmental medicine into 211u001emedical education, health care providers generally receive a very limited amount 211u001eof training in occupational and environmental health, and in pesticide-related 211u001eillnesses, in particular. The updating of this manual is part of a larger 211u001einitiative of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, in conjunction with 211u001enumerous federal agencies, associations of health professionals, and related 211u001eorganizations to help health care providers become better aware, educated, and 211u001etrained in the area of pesticide-related health concerns.
