The U.S. Navy, as the lead agency, has prepared an Explanation of Significant211u001eDifferrences (ESD) for Site 1 (Operable Unit 1)--Inactive Sanitary Landfill, 211u001eNaval Air Station Pensacola. The Navy, with concurrence from the United States 211u001eEnvironmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and the Florida Department of 211u001eEnvironmental Protection (FDEP), selected a remedy that called for discharging 211u001etreated groundwater into a nearby wetland. The modification was necessary because 211u001ethe Navy's wastewater treatment system is better able to handle daily discharges 211u001eof low chemical concentrations than an annual discharge of more concentrated 211u001echemicals. This change will also increase cost effectiveness while continuing to 211u001eprotect human health and the environment.
