Traffic Control Devices in Texas Border Areas: Summary of Research and211 Recommendations

This report summarizes the findings of a three-year research project on211u001ecomprehension of traffic control devices among drivers in Texas border areas. The 211u001eresearch evaluated 116 different traffic control devices, which included 33 211u001estandard devices and numerous alternative designs for those standard devices. 211u001eEvaluations consisted of driver surveys in which drivers were presented an image 211u001eof a device and asked what it meant. Responses were recorded and later classified 211u001einto categories that reflect understanding of the device. No changes are 211u001erecommended as supplements for six standard signs. Additional emphasis is 211u001erecommended for three device categories. Three standard devices are recommended 211u001efor modifications in design or use. Four devices are identified for future 211u001eresearch efforts.
