In 1995, the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) and the Infectious Diseases211u001eSociety of America (IDSA) developed guidelines for preventing opportunistic 211u001einfections (OIs) in persons infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) . 211u001eThese guidelines, written for health-care providers and patients, were revised in 211u001e1997 and published in the MMWR, Clinical Infectious Diseases , the Annals of 211u001eInternal Medicine, the American Family Physician , and Pediatrics; an 211u001eaccompanying editorial appeared in JAMA. Response to these guidelines (e.g., the 211u001emany requests for reprints and observations from health-care providers) suggests 211u001ethey have served as a valuable reference for HIV care providers. Because the 1995 211u001eand 1997 guidelines included ratings indicating the strength of each 211u001erecommendation and the quality of supporting evidence, readers were able to 211u001eassess the relative importance of each recommendation.
