The project's goal was to support collaboration between subsistence hunters of211u001eharbor seals, scientists, and resource management agencies to assess the factors 211u001ewhich are affecting the recovery of the harbor seal population of the oil spill 211u001earea and to identify ways to reduce these impacts. A community-based biosampling 211u001eeffort was designed and implemented. Workshops in which hunters and Youth Area 211u001eWatch program participants were trained in biosampling techniques took place. A 211u001etraining manual and video were produced and distributed. By September 1998, 211u001esamples from 119 subsistence-taken studies, and additional samples were archived 211u001efor future contaminants work. A data management system based at the University of 211u001eAlaska Fairbanks Museum was being implemented as of September 1998. Several 211u001eworkshops took place in which subsistence users, scientists, and resource 211u001emanagers discused study goals and findings, and developed recommendations for 211u001efuture collaborations.
