Modelling of Two-Phase Flows in Ladle Systems

Though extensive experimental and numerical investigations have been conducted211u001efor flows in ladle systems, most f the past studies have been made for aqueous 211u001esystems. Sparse work has been done on flow characteristics of the molten metals. 211u001eBriefly reviewing the state-of-the-art on researches of flows in metallurgical 211u001eprocesses, the present paper describes numerical investigations of two phase 211u001eflows occurring in metallurgical processes. The typical cases considered are 211u001ethose in ladles with nitrogen-Wood's metal and air-water systems. A numerical 211u001estudy of two phase flow in a ladle with gas stirred liquid Wood's metal is first 211u001edescribed. A cylindrical model ladle containing the molten metal is considered, 211u001eand nitrogen is injected vertically upward through a nozzle centrally located at 211u001ethe bottom. An Eulerian-Eulerian two phase model s used. The interface momentum 211u001eexchange includes effects of drag, lift and turbulent dispersion. Different drag 211u001ecoefficient and lift force coefficient have been examined to find a reasonable 211u001eset of values for these parameters.
