The PC technology is rapidly gaining ground in realizing automation systems and211u001ein automation applications. The use of PC-based systems at all levels in 211u001eenterprise starting from business management systems down to factory floor 211u001eautomation systems will also ease the vertical integration between functions at 211u001edifferent levels. The following important technical topics were chosen for the 211u001eseminar: distribution and integration technologies (e.g., COM, DCOM, OPC, Active 211u001eX, Java Automation); Soft PLC; HMI and SCADA systems; batch process control; real-211u001etime systems (e.g., embedded systems in machine controls); reliability issues; 211u001eoperating system issues; and standardization and/or harmonization issues (e.g., 211u001eOPC, OpenControl, OMAC, field buses). The report consists of a compilation of 211u001epapers that were presented during the paring 1999 postgraduate course at the HUT 211u001eInformation and computer systems in automation.
