Nebraska Department of Roads (NDOR) has a long experience with jointless bridges.211u001eIntegral abutments and piers are used with bridges up to 600-ft long. However, 211u001efor bridges built with the NU I-girders, which have a very wide bottom flange, 211u001eand have large skews, current NDOR details require a wide peir cap and abutment 211u001eback-wall. The main objective of this research is to simplify the 211u001esuperstructure/substructure joint details for NU-I girder continuous bridges. 211u001eThis report gives recommendations for: (1) types of bearing devices that can be 211u001eused with integral peirs, (2) selection guide for bearing devices, (3) new 211u001edetails developed for fixed and expansion bearing joints, (4) new details for the 211u001epier cap to enhance its aesthetics, and (5) new details developed for replacing 211u001ethe concrete diaphragm with steel diaphragm. In addition, this report gives 211u001erecommendations for making the girders continuous before casting the deck slab.
