Consumption of Seafood and Wild Game Contaminated with Mercury, Brunswick, Glynn211 County, Georgia

The Linden Chemical and Plastics (LCP) Company Ross Road site in the city of211u001eBrunswick, Georgia is located on 550 acres along the Turtle River and adjacent to 211u001etidal creeks and marshlands. Elevated levels of mercury were detected in soil, 211u001esediment, crab, and oyster samples collected from the LCP site and nearby areas 211u001eof the Turtle River and its tributaries. The following objectives were designed 211u001eto address the concerns of the community as well as help develop an information 211u001ebase for providing guidance for safe seafood consumption and effective risk 211u001ecommunication strategies: Compare the prevalence of self-reported symptoms and 211u001eillnesses of individuals who consumed seafood from the seafood consumption 211u001eadvisory area of the Turtle River and its tributaries to the prevalence of the 211u001esame self-reported symptoms and illnesses among individuals who did not consume 211u001eseafood from the area of interest; Determine seafood and wildlgame consumption 211u001elevels among local residents and assess the accuracy of self-reporting of 211u001econsumption levels; Provide a basis for developing sound recommendations for 211u001eseafood consumption advisories for the community; and Assess individuals for 211u001emercury exposure using biological evidence (24-hour urine creatinine clearance 211u001etest).
