While it is widely acknowledged that managed care has brought about fundamental changes in hospital contracting for physician services, the economic effects of these changes on hospital performance are largely unknown. This study examines shifts in the modes of hospital contracting for physician services in the 1990s, their risk-sharing attributes, and the effects on hospital success in obtaining managed care contracts and hospital cost growth.
