The economic census is the major source of facts about the structure and211u001efunctioning of the Nation's economy. It provides essential information for 211u001egovernment, business, industry, and the general public. The economic census 211u001efurnishes an important part of the framework for such composite measures as the 211u001egross domestic product estimates, input/output measures, production and price 211u001eindexes, and other statistical series that measure short-term changes in economic 211u001econditions. Specific uses of economic census data include the following: 211u001ePolicymaking agencies of the Federal Government use the data to monitor economic 211u001eactivity and assess the effectiveness of policies; State and local governments 211u001euse the data to assess business activities; Trade associations study trends in 211u001etheir own and competing industries and individual businesses use the data to 211u001elocate potential market. Data from the 1997 Economic Census are published 211u001eprimarily on the basis of the North American Industry Classification System 211u001e(NAICS). These reports include statistics such as establishments, employment, 211u001epayroll, value added, cost of materials, value of business done, and capital 211u001eexpenditures.
