Times Beach, Missouri: Dioxin Incinerator Emissions Exposure Study

Planned incineration of hazardous wastes from Times Beach and 26 other eastern211u001eMissouri dioxin sites created community concerns over potential exposure to a 211u001ehazardous waste incinerator destroying 2, 3, 7, 8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin 211u001e(TCDD) and related compounds. Internal dose levels were measured by determining 211u001ethe concentration of these substances in serum and the results reported on a 211u001elipid adjusted basis. The study incurporated a prospective cohort design in which 211u001eparticipants selected at random from the target and comparison areas were tested 211u001ebefore the incineration process began, four months into the incineration process, 211u001eand immediately after all materials were incinerated. Questionnarie responses 211u001ewere used to determine potential confounders.
