The ability of naturally occurring processes to attenuate chlorinated volatile211u001eorganic compounds (CVOC's) beneath the Savannah River flood plain at the TNX 211u001efacility, Savannah River Site, South Carolina was examined for this 211u001einvestigation. The presence of CVOC's in flood-plain tree trunks indicated that 211u001ethe trees were removing contaminants from the ground water. Concentrations of 211u001eCVOC's in tree trunks were used as an aid in mapping the shallow ground-water 211u001econtamination. The adsorption potential for chlorinated compound was high in 211u001elocalized organic-rich sediments of the lower flood plain, but was substantially 211u001elower in other tested areas. Bioremediation potential of TCE may be present in 211u001elocalized areas of the lower flood plain, but probably is not significant in the 211u001eupper flood-plain sediments.
