摘要

The use of a Geographical Information System (GIS) to locate transportation211u001eroutes as well as springs, wells and surface water bodies offers the opportunity 211u001efor tracking and monitoring the effects of accidental releases from transported 211u001ewaste in the case of an overturned truck. The four-county area of Washington, 211u001eMadison, Benton, and Carroll counties in Northwest Arkansas was chosen for this 211u001eGIS demonstration project. Previous work by the University of Arkansas Department 211u001eof Geology and the Center for Advanced Spatial Technology (CAST) provided base 211u001emaps including springs, wells, and surface water bodies in the four-county area. 211u001eIn addition, TIGER/Line data were readily available for locating transportation 211u001eroutes. The Intergraph software, GeoMedia was chosen to manipulate the data 211u001ebecause the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department currently uses 211u001eGeoMedia for GIS applications. The report includes descriptions of data 211u001emanipulation, layer construction, computer code, and a basic tutorial for the the 211u001eresults of this research. The resulting product is the ability to call up a 211u001eregion, and either 'point and click' on a particular location, or to input 211u001eUniversal Transverse Mercator (UTM) coordinates of a location. The software will 211u001elocate the mapped water resources within a specified radius of those points.
