Smart card-based systems have the potential to eliminate a large number of computer security problems related, to for example, user authentication and storage of encryption keys. This is of immense importance since we are increasingly dependent on not only secure data but also the availability of computer and networks, which have become central tools for numerous professionals in the information society. In this report advantages and issues related to the introduction of smart card-based systems are discussed. It is apparent that thorough considerations have to be made to avoid the pitfalls and exploit the full potential of such a system.
