Joint NRC/EPA Sewage Sludge Radiological Survey: Survey Design and Test Site211 Results

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the U.S. Environmental211u001eProtection Agency (EPA), through a subcommittee of the Interagency Steering 211u001eCommittee on Radiation Standards (ISCORS), are sponsoring a joint survey to 211u001ecollect information concerning radioactive materials in sewage sludge and ash 211u001efrom sewage treatment plants (referred to in the industry as publicly owned 211u001etreatment works (POTWSs)). The objectives of this joint NRC/EPA sewage sludge/ash 211u001esurvey are to: (1) obtain data on the levels of radioactive materials in sludge 211u001eand ash at POTWs from across the country; (2) estimate the extent to which 211u001eradioactive contamination comes from either NRC/State licensees or naturally-211u001eoccurring radioactiviey; and (3) support potential rulemaking decisions by NRC or 211u001eEPA, if necessitated by the survey results. This report summarizes the results at 211u001enine POTW sites where the questionnaire methods and sampling and analytical 211u001eprocedures were tested.
