Using information obtained from bench-scale tests, a simple convolution integral211u001emodel is applied for predicting heat release rate and smoke production rate of 211u001elarge-scale test fires of surface materials. The model is based on a convolution 211u001eproduct of time derivative of effective area with the corresponding Cone 211u001eCalorimeter data per unit area. In the convolution model of Wickstrom and 211u001eGoransson the model is applied only for the prediction of the heat release rate. 211u001eThe analytical expressions for the effective areas were developed from the visual 211u001eobservations of the burning area of the material in the large-scale test. In this 211u001ereport a trial was made to extend the convolution model also to the prediction of 211u001ethe smoke production rate. Because determination of effective areas cannot in 211u001ethis case be based on the observations, they have to be solved by numerical 211u001einverse methods. For the inverse solution of the apriori unknown effective areas, 211u001eseveral techniques were developed. Mathematical method and a computer program 211u001ethat uses regularized Singular Value Decomposition was written. Fast Fourier 211u001etransform technique and simple average solution method were successfully applied 211u001eas alternative methods. The smoke production rate and heat release rate in the 211u001eFull Scale Room Corner Test ISO 9705 and in the Cone Calorimeter Test (ISO 9705) 211u001ewere analyzed for 9 materials of the EUREFIC set of building products. Effective 211u001eareas both for the prediction of heat release rate and smoke production rate were 211u001ecalculated.
