Railroad Horn Systems Research

The U.S. Department of Transportation, Research and Special Programs211u001eAdministration, Volpe National Transportation Systems Center (Volpe Center), 211u001eAcoustics Facility, in support f the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), is 211u001econducting safety research to evaluate the effectiveness of various methods for 211u001ereducing the number of accidents and resulting casualties at highway-railroad 211u001egrade crossings. The overall research effort is investigating the use of rail 211u001eequipment warning devices (e.g., horns, alerting lights, and reflectorization) 211u001eand the use of track system devices (e.g., signs, signals and lighting systems). 211u001eAs part of this research, the current effort reported here evaluates the 211u001edetectability of horn systems used as audible warning for motorists at highway-211u001erailroad grade crossings, and their resulting impact on the community noise 211u001eenvironment.
