Because both the anodic and cathodic gain-defining elements are produced211u001elithographically on the same rigid substrate, the Gas Microstrip Detector (GMSD) 211u001emakes an excellent planar (position sensitive) amplifier of incident electron 211u001eclouds. We have studied the dependence of the gas gain and pulse height 211u001eresolution of the plate as a function of various geometric and gas parameters. 211u001eThe results show that a GMSD can be made very insensitive to the shape of the 211u001edrift electrode, allowing it to be used in a wide variety of applications. An 211u001eexample of an electron-yield X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS) study is 211u001egiven.
