In Hawaii a supply of water may depend on anything from rain on the roof at Kona211u001eto elaborate tunneling for water at Honolulu. Historically the people of Hawaii 211u001ehave looked mauka-to the mountain watersheds-for much of their water. What they 211u001enow see are watershed slopes clothed with vegetation that protects the soil and 211u001ehelps deep percolation of water. But 80 year ago, these same slopes brought back 211u001evegetation to its present state.
