The MMS prepared this environmental impact statement (EIS) on Chevron's plan to211u001edrill 20 new wells within the Destin Dome (DD) 56 Unit, to produce up to 450 211u001etrillion cubic feet of natural gas per day, and to transport the gas through 211u001epipelines to processing plants in Alabama. The 11 blocks that make up the DD 56 211u001eUnit were leased from the Federal Government by Chevron during the 1980's. 211u001eChevron has already drilled three exploratory wells within the Unit, which showed 211u001ethat there is a great quantity of natural gas about 24,000 feet below the 211u001eseafloor. The closes point of the Unit to the coastline of the Florida Panhandle 211u001eis about 25 miles due south of Pensacola, Florida.
