20 Million Jobs: January 1993-November 1999. Response to Title III of the211 Balanced Budget Act of 1997

Since January 1993, the economy has generated 20 million new jobs. A higher211u001eproportion of the population aged 16 and over is employed now than ever before, 211u001eand at 4.1 percent the unemployment rate is lower than it has been since 1970. 211u001eMoreover, as the evidence in this paper shows, a very high proportion of the new 211u001ejobs that people are taking are good jobs in industry/occupation categories that 211u001epay above-median wages. The benefits of a strong labor market are being shared 211u001ewidely among U.S. workers including groups that saw little if any progress over 211u001ethe 1973-93 period.
