In the frame of the bilateral governmental program for scientific and technical211u001ecooperation existing between Italy and Hungary a successful series of biennial 211u001eSymposia were undertaken since the early 1980s. These were designed to provide 211u001escientists of both countries with a permanent forum for the evaluation of ongoing 211u001ejoint projects the exchange of views on future priorities and the proposal of 211u001enovel initiatives. On the other hand, the transboundary nature of the problems 211u001edealt with by these Symposia always made the participation of prominent 211u001escientists from other countries a necessary complement substantially enhancing 211u001ethe international characteristics of such events. Each Symposium features a 211u001especific theme of primary importance within the general context of human health 211u001eand environmental protection. In this respect, the ninth edition of this series 211u001eof Symposia focuses on the major concerns raised by chemical pollution on all 211u001easpects of urban life. More than one half of the world population live today in 211u001ebig cities, with all the attendant problems as regards air, water and soil 211u001equality, safe disposal of urban waste, occupational exposure, in one word, the 211u001ephysical, mental and cultural welfare of citizens at large.
