摘要

A 46 m long, 7.3 m deep, and 0.6 m wide permeable subsurface reactive wall was211u001einstalled at the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Supports Center, near Elizabeth City, 211u001eNorth Carolina, in June 1996. The reactive wall was designed to remediate 211u001ehexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) contaminated groundwater at the site, in addition to 211u001etreating portions of a larger overlapping trichloroethylene (TCE) groundwater 211u001eplume which has not yet been fully characterized. The wall was installed in 211u001eapproximately 6 hours using a continuous trenching technique, which 211u001esimultaneously removed aquifer sediments and installed the porous reactive 211u001emedium. The reactive medium was composed entirely on granular iron, with an 211u001eaverage grain size (d(sub 50)) of 0.4mm. The reactive medium was selected from 211u001evarious mixtures on the basis of reaction rates with Cr(VI), TCE and degredation 211u001eproducts, hydraulic conductivity, porosity, and cost.
