In the IMSI project, Laboratory of Space Technology of Helsinki University of211u001eTechnology (HUT) investigated combined use of SAR and microwave radiometer (MWR) 211u001edata for classification of open water and various ice types in the Baltic Sea. 211u001eHUT also aided Finnish Institute of Marine Research (FIMR) in the development of 211u001ethe RADARSAT and ERS-2 SAR sea ice classification algorithms by studying C-band 211u001ebackscattering signatures of various Baltic Sea ice types. Classification of 211u001evarious Baltic Sea ice types and open water leads was investigated using (1) MWR 211u001edata, and (2) combined MWR and SAR data. The HUTSCAT C-band data were used to 211u001einvestigate: (1) variation of the backscattering coefficients of various ice 211u001etypes as a function of incidence angle, (2) statistical properties of the 211u001ebackscattering coefficients of various ice types, (3) backscattering properties 211u001eof ice deformations vs. level ice, and (4) the effect of snow cover wetness in 211u001ethe previous studies.
