The former Multnomah Metals Company operated in southwest Portland from the early-1920s through the mid-1960s. The company operated a secondary lead smelter that melted and recycled lead, solder, and other scrap metals. In 1974, the property was re-zoned for residential use, and the original buildings were demolished the subsequent year. Currently, a residential duplex stands where the former lead smelter existed. Prior to 2003, there were no investigations to determine if the site or surrounding properties had been contaminated from past operations at the smelting plant. In 2003, at the request of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) collected soil samples from the site. DEQ gathered and tested four surface samples from the eastern and northeastern boundary of the property.
