The failure of what have been termed conventional methods to reclaim contaminated211u001eenvironmental media has over the years lead to the interest and development of 211u001ealternative technologies. One of these technologies is bioremediation, or the 211u001eutilization of microbial agents to reduce the overall mass or toxicity of 211u001econtamination within soil and groundwater systems. Bioremediation has its origins 211u001ein the SunTech process which was patented in 1974. The process relied on the 211u001eaddition of oxygen and nutrients to contaminated portions of an aquifer to 211u001estimulate the reduction of contaminants through microbial processes. The SunTech 211u001eprocess used an in-well air sparging apparatus to supply oxygen to the microflora 211u001ewithin contaminated systems. For years, variants of this technology have been 211u001eused in remediation efforts with varying degrees of success. All utilizd the more 211u001ethermodynamically favorable aerobic process.
