The mission of the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM) is to promote211u001eimproved patient care, research, and education in primary care and general 211u001einternal medicine. The Society established a Managed Care Task Force to address 211u001eits members and their patients face relating to managed care. The Task Force, in 211u001ecollaboration with the society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFEM), the 211u001eAmerican Academy on Physician and Patient (AAPP), and the Association of 211u001eSubspecialty Professors (ASP) planned a one-day symposium to explore emerging 211u001echallenges physicians practicing in managed care settings are facing with respect 211u001eto patient care and education. This was planned as a far-reaching effort that 211u001ewould enlist the energies and talents of leaders in both primary and specialty 211u001ecare. The overall goal of this symposium was to generate principles and teaching 211u001estrategies that would enhance generalists' roles as managers and advocates for 211u001epatient care, to interface with the public about issues related to doctor-patient 211u001erelationships and expectations for specialty care, and to further enhance and 211u001edisseminate teaching models that are effective and appropriate for managed care 211u001eenvironments. The symposium was held, May 1, 1997, in Washington, D,C. 211u001eProceedings were published as a special supplement to the Journal of General 211u001eInternal Medicine Volume 14, Supplement 1, January 1999.
