TS-5 Target Complex Cultural Resource Inventory, Wendover Air Force Range, Tooele211 County, Utah

Historical Research Associates, Inc. (HRA) conducted a cultural resources211u001einventory of the TS-5 project area, located within the Wendover Air Force Range, 211u001eTooele County, Utah, in the summer of 1998. The authors performed this work at 211u001ethe request of the Intermountain Support Office-Denver, Cultural Resources and 211u001eNational Register Program Services, in response to proposed 388th Fighter Wing 211u001etarget and training area developments and operations. The TS-5 project area 211u001eencompasses approximately 13,470 acres of low-relief dunes and playa flats, 211u001elocated about 25 miles south of Interstate 80 in the southern Great Salt Lake 211u001eDesert. As part of this project, HRA inventories 9,515 acreas; the remaining 211u001e3,955 acres were inventories previously in 1996 (Arkush 1997a). HRA documented a 211u001etotal of fifty-nine previously unrecorded prehistoric sites within the 9,515 211u001esurveyed acres. Counting the two sites recorded during the 1996 survey, a total 211u001eof sixty-one prehistoric sites are currently known to exist within the TS-5 211u001eproject area. A large percentage of these sites contain Western Stemmed 211u001eprojectile points and assemblages dating to the Early Archaic Period (between 211u001e9,000 to 7,500 B.C.), the time when the Gilbert Shoreline of pluvial Lake 211u001eBonneville occupied this portion of the Great Salt Lake Desert. Of the sixty-one 211u001eprehistoric sites located within the TS-5 project area, eight are recommended 211u001eeligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
