Research quantifying both the beneficial and unintended effects of secondaryischemic stroke prevention agents within the elderly nursing home population is lacking. Using cross-sectional, cohort and case-control study designs, we sought to describe treatment patterns, estimate the relative beneficial effects (subsequent stroke and mortality) and estimate the relative bleeding effects of secondary stroke prevention agents among a population of elderly stroke survivors living in the nursing home. Lastly, we describe the application of the propensity score to observational studies for estimating a causal treatment effect.
