Initial Trails with a 4 Channel Fiberoptic Hydrophone Arrary.

We have constructed and built a small fiber optic hydrophone array based on a fiber optic cable using a passive homodyne demodulation approach. The hydrophone coils are wound around the main fiber cable. During the initial tank trials the fibers were torn when bending the cable based fiber array. The sensitivity to static pressure was much lower than expected and the frequency response showed a large resonance at 5 kHz. A slightly different array design will be used to account for the mechanical problems. The hydrophone coils will be mounted on the end of a short fiber branch connected to the cable so that forces acting on it will be smaller. Also, a new version of the hydrophone elements with the reference coils wound on a rigid metal cylinder are being made in order to suppress the observed resonance when using the previous design with a water backed reference coil.
