A number of trials with passive remote infra red detectors were performed during 1999. The trials included open-air releases (ammonia) as well as controlled laboratory experiment (chemical warfare agents). A theoretical study regarding the possibility to use this kind of systems to detect sulphur dioxide, was made as a complementary addition. The purpose with this report is to summarize trials, simulations and data from the literature. That material can help us to find useful conclusions for the Swedish Rescue Service Agency (SRV) - if possible also for the defense forces - before a procurement of this kind of equipment. Even if there will be a variation in sensitivity between substances and the data set not is complete for all possible toxic chemicals, the conclusion is that this technology works well with most of the interesting substances. One important exception is chlorine that is not possible to detect with this technology. For some substances more data would be desirable. Furthermore, it is desirable to improve data regarding the infra red background(s). The latter is to a great extent possible to compute from measurements done by Defense Research Establishment, division of Sensor Technology. Finally the recommendation to SRV is to procure a small number of systems and perform practical trials in order to make a tactical evaluation. That will also give valuable information on practical performance.
