GARDS (Ground Area Reconnaissance Detection System).

GARDS is an instrument indicating the risk for contamination of a vehicle. The contamination risk depends on the state of the road. Much splashes from the road, means an increased risk for contamination. On an asphalt road for example, there is a small amount of splashes and therefore, the risk for contamination is also very little. For non-persistent agents with detectionable vapor concentration, GARDS is working as an ordinary air detection equipment. GARDS has been tested on IKV91 during the winter. The result shows that the system is working and the reaction time is faster than SRVs prototype of a cross-country truck. One reason for the faster reaction time can be that an armoured tracked vehicle gives more splashes from the road than a cross-country truck. During the trials, GARDS sounded the alarm when the vehicle had come 1 to 2 lengths of a vehicle into the contaminated area. The system is working in speeds from about 6 km/h to more than 60 km/h. This is one of the studies in a commission from the Swedish Defense Material Administration. The whole commission contains studies of different possibilities of installing C warning instruments in vehicles belonging to the Swedish defense.
