The closing down of a number of military installations has started in Sweden. An important issue is whether underground cable systems can be left in the soil or have to be removed after the installations have closed. This preliminary study discusses the possible environmental impact cables might give rise to. The report deals with today's knowledge concerning corrosion of cables and their environmental impact. The study also suggests two military installations, where extended and complementary studies can be performed. Lead has a known ecological impact and is used as cable sheathing in earlier paper-insulated cables (installed after 1900). For power current cable there was a change from paper-insulated cables to oil-filled cables in the 1930's and 40's. Detection of oil and PCB, leaking from oil-filled cables has been treated in a few reports. As for modern plastic cables (installed in the 1950's and 60's to recent) the additives in the plastic seem to have the greatest environmental effect. One example is plasticizers in cable insulated with PVC. The preliminary study shows that there are gaps in the knowledge concerning leakage (quantity, spreading and environmental impact) of metals and organic compounds from cables. There is a need for field studies combined with laboratory analysis.
