QIOs and Business Coalitions: A Guidebook to Collaborating for QualityImprovement. Conference, Abstract, Executive Summary and Final Report

In 1999, The Center for Clinical Quality Evaluation (CCQE), the American HealthQuality Association (AHQA), the Midwest Business Group on Health (MBGH), and the National Business Coalition of Health (NBCH) convened a Follow-up Invitational Workshop on community-based Quality Improvement. The initial January 1997 workshop assembled representatives from selected Quality Improvement Organization (QIOs)/Peer Review Organizations (PROs) and business coalitions from nine states to discuss opportunities for collaboration on quality improvement efforts. The purpose of the 1999 meeting was for these representatives to report on their collaborative activities. As a result, this publication includes profiles and examples from those organizations that participated in both the 1997 and 1999 meetings and is intended to serve as a guide to promote collaboration between QIOs and business coalitions on community-based health care quality improvement projects. The report makes the 'business case' for collaboration and provides constructive guidance on the major steps involved in implementing a collaborative endeavor. The report includes profiles of three partnership (Wisconsin, Tennessee, and New York) and mini-profiles of other collaborations represented at the conference. The appendix offers the names of experts who might by useful to QIO and coalition leaders and they attempt to replicate the successes of these organizations.
